After a few difficulties in the forest bordering Frostmarris, Icemark's capital, Thirrin meets an intense fifteen year old wizard named Oskan; a boy with healing talents that he learned from his mother, a white witch. Soon after wards, he becomes one of Thirrin's advisers. On this particular year, the snow had fallen late and Oskan told Thirrin of the omen that would be brought with it. The Icemark was going to go to war against the Polypontian Empire.
The Polypontian Empire, led by General Scipio Bellorum, had never lost a war with anyone, and had taken over several countries surrounding Icemark. In their first battle with Icemark, Redrought had sacrificed his whole army and had put his own life on the line. In a surprise attack, Redrought was killed by the last solider standing on the Polypontian Empire's side. Redrought had done this to give Thirrin time to create an army to fend off the Empire's force, and to evacuate the citizens of Frostmarris.
When the Polypontian's send out a small army to capture Thirrin, she goes out to her first real battle, and defeats the army. Soon she makes her way to the Hypolitian people, and there, she receives information from the wolf-folks that her father was killed during the war. As a result, Thirrin becomes queen of the small country in place of her father. Later she starts her quest to make allies and ends up with the Vampire kingdom and the Snow Leopards.
As the cold winter ice begins to thaw away, the Polypontians begin their move again, and Thirrin and her army are waiting for them. In this war, Thirrin's aunt is killed and Thirrin is left to fend for herself. In the last battle when Icemark fights the Polypontians, Thirrin's army is out numbered by several hundreds, will the weak alliences with the snow leopards, werewolves, and the vampire kingdom survive an intense battle, or fall through the cracks and fail to save the tiny country of Icemark.
